Ranveer Singh and Sonakshi Sinha in  Vikramaditya Motwane’s “Lootera”.

Inspired by an Omar Henry’s classic short story titled “The Last Leaf”, Lootera is a sensitive love story wonderfully directed by the talented Vikramaditya Motwane. This old world romantic movie set in India in the 1950’s post-independence essentially deals with the concept of sacrifice in love. To understand in depth why this movie is such a brilliant watch we will need to undertake a clinical dissection. The clinical dissection is as follows

  1. The concept:

Inspired by O Henry’s classic short story “The Leaf” the concept of this movie is based on an understanding that love is an emotion that demands sacrifice and, so you must be prepared to do it when required. Additionally, this movie also talks about the power of hope.

  1. The Plot:

The plot of this charming love story revolves around a con artist Varun Shrivastav (Ranveer Singh) who enters the household of a rich Bengali Zamindar with the intention to con i.e. to rob. It is during his brief stay with the Zamindar that he falls in love with his beautiful daughter Pakhi (Sonakshi Sinha). The rest of this movie deals with the ups and downs of the Pakhi-Varun love story and, the ultimate sacrifice that Varun makes for his love.

  1. Story/Screenplay:

The story/screenplay written by Vikramaditya Motwane and Bhavani Iyer has been sensitively adapted from O Henry’s classic short story “The Last Leaf”. The unique feature of this screenplay/story being that it slowly grows without you ever realizing it. The fact that the wonderful climax actually brings a smile to your face is also due to great writing and, full credit to the writers for managing to keep alive the spirit of “The Last Leaf” in this movie.

  1. Moral of the Movie:

The essence of this movie lies in the fact that the story is based on sacrifice in love and hope. So the moral of this movie is

  1. Love is a human emotion that demands sacrifice and, hence when in love you must be prepared for it.
  2. Hope is a human virtue that has the power to free human beings from the chains of an emotion called “fear” and, so if an opportunity to provide hope to people around you arises then you must do so without any hesitation.
